DOUBLE-BILL PRESENTATION

Dances with Trane is a new creation and Canadian premiere from Holla Jazz, inspired by the prolific work of American jazz artist John Coltrane. With choreography by Natasha Powell in collaboration with the dancers, this homage draws inspiration and ideas from the infamous Coltrane Circle illustration. Using the music of Coltrane as a guide, this collection of dances will explore how our relationships to ourselves, those around us, and the unseen, can exist in multiple ways.

Montreal Composer and DJ Andy Williams will open the show by educating the audience on the music of the Coltrane era while spinning timeless, mood-setting tracks.

Holla Jazz

Holla Jazz is an award-winning dance company based in Toronto that explores soulful and funky approaches to jazz dance. The Holla Jazz experience is marked by their cool and contemporary way of producing fresh dance works, all while inspiring a lasting love and appreciation for jazz dance and music. The company’s inaugural production, FLOOR’D, garnered a Dora Mavor Moore Award for their Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble.

Established in 2016 by Artistic Director Natasha Powell, Holla Jazz was founded as a forum for developing and presenting artists that work and improvise together, to create harmonious and transformative experiences. The company aims to reinvigorate jazz dance with its sister dances including hip hop and house, as innovative and important vehicles for expression, while showcasing freedom and one’s own identity through the spirit of jazz.

Andy Williams

Andy Williams has been schooling cats behind the decks for over three decades and continues to surprise and educate the masses on what constitutes a good groove. With over 20 years in radio, regular worldwide touring stints, sharing the stage with like-minded critically acclaimed diggers (Mr. Scruff, Quantic, Keb Darge, Nickodemus, Rainer Trueby, Bugz in the Attic, etc.) and holding down The Goods (one of Montreal's best club nights and radio show) for 10 years, there is no denying that Andy Williams comes prepared to knock it out of the park every time. Add to this his curatorial duties on the Public Transit Recordings jazz compilations Variations in Time: A Jazz Perspective and Monk Swing as well as being a composer in his own right, and you have one well-versed jazz man.
